Scree Garden
Scree deposits are aggregations
of small, loose rock debris, found at the base of steep inclines or cliffs. They are unique growing mediums for plants, and
the conditions in which these plants grow may in many ways be quite limiting. Besides the weather itself, alpine plants rely
on specific nutrients available in their specialized soils, where rocks are continually being weathered and broken down through
chemical and physical changes. Alpine plants also rely on the weather and climate itself, as continual freezing and thawing
of the soil creates "frost heaves", areas of disturbed soil suitable for new plant growth. This soil movement is also responsible
for aeration. The length of growing season also plays a critical role for alpine plants. With a short growing season, and
a nutrient deficiency in the young mountain soil, many alpine plants take on a stunted appearance. Their low profile also
helps to limit damage caused by wind
